Marvin Harrison Sr. says Marvin Harrison Jr. ‘knows what it takes’

NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Marvin Harrison Sr. spoke about his mentorship of his son, Ohio State star wideout Marvin Harrison Jr., in a recent interview with Clay Hall of ABC6 (WSYX) in Columbus.

“I used to film the games and then when they were over on Saturday nights or Sunday morning, we would watch it and just go over it very thoroughly with him,” Harrison Sr. told ABC6. “I guess from whenever he could start playing — so 7, 8, 9, 10 — we was always watching and just learning. Till this day he’s always remembered all these times that I’ve yelled at him. But I think it has paid off.”

Harrison Sr. piled up 1,102 catches, 14,580 receiving yards and 128 receiving touchdowns in a prolific 13-year career with the Indianapolis Colts after starring at Syracuse. Harrison Jr. was a Biletnikoff Award finalist this past season at Ohio State, where he emerged as one of the best wide receivers in the country as a sophomore.

Although Harrison Sr. was pretty hands-on with Harrison Jr.’s development as a player during his childhood, there came a point when he changed his approach.

“Once he got to high school, I started to step back a little bit and just let him be himself,” Harrison Sr. said. “And then he’s turned into what he is today.”

Harrison Sr. added: “He understands it now. I don’t even need to speak [work ethic] into him anymore. Now he knows that the hard work is gonna pay off. This is what everyone always told him about me. He knows what it takes: a little more effort, and good things will happen.”

Hall then asked Harrison Sr. what his son’s ceiling is.

“The ceiling? I don’t know,” Harrison Sr. said. “But I know we did talk at the end of the season, and we discussed what we can do better for next year — what you can improve on, and the things that I’m going to look forward to as a former coach and a parent, and how I see you can get better. So we have our little three or four things that we want to improve on from last year that’s going to help him this year.”

Although Harrison Jr. won’t have two-time Heisman Trophy finalist C.J. Stroud throwing him the ball, he might have a familiar face under center. Junior Kyle McCord is competing with redshirt freshman Devin Brown to be the Buckeyes’ next starting signal caller.

Not only has McCord backed up Stroud the last two seasons, and even started a game in 2021, but he was also Harrison Jr.’s high school quarterback at St. Joe’s Prep in Philadelphia. Together, McCord and Harrison Jr. won three state titles.

“I think they’re always going to have a vibe,” Harrison Sr. said of McCord and Harrison Jr. “Kyle, he has the work ethic also. I can say that because I’ve been around him for four or five years now. Very intelligent kid. He’s looking forward to competing. And I think the sky’s going to be the limit for him. People haven’t seen him play a full season yet, but I think when he does, it’s going to be a good thing.”

Report: C.J. Stroud will throw at NFL Scouting Combine

Former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud is gunning for the top overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. At the moment, Alabama’s Bryce Young is the frontrunner for that honor. But Young won’t be throwing in this week’s NFL Combine. Stroud, on the other hand, will be, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud will throw at this week’s NFL Scouting Combine, while Alabama QB Bryce Young will wait to do so for his pro day,” Rapoport said in a tweet Monday morning.

“Young is long past his AC joint injury from this season, but he’ll just do interviews in Indy,” Rapoport also added in the tweet.

Florida’s Anthony Richardson and Kentucky quarterback Will Levis, both of whom are also hoping to be the first quarterback off the board come April, will work out for pro scouts in Indianapolis along with Stroud.
