Ryan Day hopeful Buckeyes will be healthier at tailback for Maryland trip
COLUMBUS — Ohio State head coach Ryan Day offered some insight Tuesday morning about the injury statuses of running backs TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams and Chip Trayanum, all of whom missed the Indiana game.
“We feel like we have a really good chance to get all those guys back for next week,” Day said. “Now, maybe one of them won’t, but I’d be shocked if all three — Chip, Miyan and Tre — would not be available.”
Day continued: “I think we’ll get, hopefully, at least two of them back and then go from there.”
Henderson has missed the last two games with a foot injury that he’s been dealing with since the Toledo game. Williams left the Indiana game early with an apparent right leg injury. And reserve tailback/linebacker Trayanum was a scratch against the Hoosiers.
Still, Ohio State rushed for a season-high 340 yards in a 56-14 win over an Indiana team that came into last weekend ranked 82nd in run defense. Before going down, Williams piled up 147 rushing yards on 15 carries. Additionally, true freshman Dallan Hayden recorded 102 rushing yards on 19 totes.
It was a strong performance by the Buckeyes’ offensive line. All five starters up front logged Pro Football Focus offensive grades above 70, including right tackle Josh Fryar, who stepped in for the injured Dawand Jones.

Ohio State’s running back health has been a storyline all season. The Buckeyes lost Evan Pryor for the season in August. T.C. Caffey was sidelined for the year last month. Henderson’s foot injury has been nagging. Plus, Williams missed the Michigan State game and left the Penn State matchup early with a hand injury.
The Buckeyes may or may not, once again, be shorthanded at the position this week — just seven days before their most physical game of the regular season, a home matchup with Michigan.
If that’s the case, Day said he and the staff will adapt.
“Yeah, I mean we have to,” Day said. “We don’t have a choice. It’s just something you plan for and try to have contingency plans in place.”
