Former Buckeyes star Nick Bosa named first-team All-Pro for first time

Nick Bosa was the only former Buckeyes star to make this year’s NFL AP All-Pro team. The San Francisco 49ers star pass rusher was named a first-teamer at the edge rusher position, along with Dallas Cowboys defensive stalwart Micah Parsons.

Bosa finished the regular season as the NFL’s sack leader with a career-high 18.5 quarterback takedowns. He also notched a personal-best 41 solo tackles, not to mention his two forced fumbles. Bosa forced four fumbles last year and mounted 15.5 sacks but with one more game played.

He’s headlined an elite 49ers defense that has helped San Francisco to an NFC West title and a 10-game win streak that landed it the No. 2 seed in the NFC side of the playoffs.

Bosa ended his Ohio State career tied for 14th in program history with 17.5 sacks. Of course, his Buckeyes career was cut short because of a bilateral core muscle injury he suffered in the third game of the 2018 season that required surgery. His older brother, Joey Bosa — a pass rusher for the Chargers — is fourth all-time in the school record book with 26 career sacks.

Ohio State shuffles offensive staff, names Brian Hartline new offensive coordinator

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day shuffled his offensive staff Friday, most notably naming wide receivers coach Brian Hartline the Buckeyes’ new offensive coordinator. It’s the second straight offseason Ohio State has promoted Hartline. Last year, he added the title of pass game coordinator. Now, he’s the OC.

Hartline was recognized as On3’s national position coach of the year last month. He was listed as a candidate for the Kentucky OC job, and he interviewed for the head coaching position at Cincinnati when it was still available. But the former Buckeyes wideout and NFL playmaker isn’t leaving Columbus.

Hartline has earned the reputation as one of the sport’s best recruiters and developers at the wide receiver position. He’ll take on an even bigger role at Ohio State next season.

Big Ten admits error on Bruce Thornton foul call in Buckeyes controversial loss to Minnesota

Ohio State suffered its third straight loss Thursday night at home. What made that harder to stomach for Buckeyes fans was that it ended with a brutal foul call on freshman guard Bruce Thornton, who was contesting Minnesota’s Ta’lon Cooper at the rim with 1.7 seconds left and the game tied at 67-67. The whistle sent Cooper to the line, where he knocked down the game-winning free throw and sealed the upset, giving the Golden Gophers their first Big Ten win of the season.

Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said in a statement Friday morning that the Big Ten reached out about the controversial foul. Holtmann noted, according to The Columbus Dispatch‘s Adam Jardy, that the league told him “it was a clean block by Ohio State and a foul should not have been called.”

Even if the foul wasn’t called and the Buckeyes — who trailed for nearly 35 minutes and shot a season-low 40.0% from the floor — prevailed, Holtmann said they wouldn’t have really deserved to win.

“The reality is, I’m not sure that we earned this one, if we would have won it,” Holtmann said.
