ATLANTA — There are only two more sleeps before the Peach Bowl. No. 4 Ohio State and No. 1 Georgia are nearing their New Year’s Date in the College Football Playoff semifinal.

Georgia is a defending national champion looking to become the first school to repeat in the CFP era. Ohio State, on the other hand, is trying to make a statement after face planting in the second half against Michigan and backing its way into the four-team field.

But, the last time the Buckeyes won it all (2014), they snuck into the CFP, too. And they had to beat an SEC team to reach the title game.

So, what Ohio State is trying to repeat is history.

Ohio State vs. Georgia: Game time, details

Ohio State and Georgia have met only once before, and that was in the 1993 Citrus Bowl: a game that notably included well-known commentator, and then Buckeyes quarterback, Kirk Herbstreit as well as Will Muschamp, who played safety for the Bulldogs at the time and now is their co-defensive coordinator. Herbstreit and Muschamp exchanged banter earlier this week about that game, which Georgia won, 21-14. John Cooper was the Buckeyes head coach back then. Ray Goff was opposite Cooper on the Bulldogs’ sideline. Georgia moved to 9-2 on the season with the one-score win, and Ohio State dropped to 8-2-1. The Bulldogs were fueled by running back Garrison Hearst, who rushed for two touchdowns and was named the game’s MVP.

Series fun fact

Ohio State’s last win against an SEC team occurred in 2014 when the Buckeyes upset No. 1 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, setting the stage for their most recent national title. The program is 23-14-3 all-time versus SEC opponents, but Ohio State hasn’t played Ole Miss or Mississippi State in its history. The Buckeyes haven’t squared off against Georgia in three decades.
