Ohio State sets date for 2024 spring game
COLUMBUS — The Ohio State offseason is in full swing. The Buckeyes have added players from the transfer portal, retained others who could have gone to the NFL Draft and made two staff changes so far.
Before you know it, spring football will be here. And that includes the spring game, which — according to a graphic posted to X by longtime Buckeyes defensive line coach Larry Johnson — will take place on April 13.
That’s the second Saturday in April.
The graphic also reveals information about the Buckeyes’ annual coaches clinic, which the program will host at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center from April 11-12, the two days prior to the spring game.
Last year’s spring game was on April 15.
The defense won the exhibition, 40-31, but the highlights from that sunny weekend afternoon in Ohio Stadium are more memorable than the score.
Cornerback Denzel Burke teased what would be a breakout junior season with a pass break-up and another nice play downfield. Wideout Jayden Ballard flashed a one-handed catch along the sideline. Running back Chip Trayanum broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run, perhaps foreshadowing his 40-yard score in Week 3 against Western Kentucky.

With Devin Brown sidelined by a fractured pinky finger on his throwing hand, now-former Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord — still competing for the QB1 role at the time — got all the first-team snaps. He had an up-and-down day, however, notably almost throwing interceptions to linebacker C.J. Hicks and safety Sonny Styles.
McCord’s best throw of the day was a 37-yard rope to first-year wideout Carnell Tate that resulted in a touchdown for the Buckeyes’ newest stud on offense. Noah Rogers — who transferred to N.C. State earlier this offseason — capped last year’s spring game with a 57-yard, catch-and-run touchdown.
He corralled a strike from seventh-year quarterback, and graduate transfer, Tristan Gebbia before shedding three tackles en route to the end zone.
Ohio State will have more moments like that in this year’s spring game.
The first Ohio Stadium sneak peek of the 2024 Buckeyes will be on April 13.
