Former BC long snapper Gunner Daniel hired as Ohio State special teams assistant

Ohio State has a new special teams assistant: Gunner Daniel, a former long snapper who played his final two seasons at Boston College.

Daniel is a Marysville, Ohio, native. He graduated from Marysville High School after earning all-conference honors as a center and team captain during his senior season. Daniel was the 34th-best long snapper in the country coming out of high school, according to Kohl’s Kicking.

He started his college career at Ball State but didn’t see any game action his freshman year in 2017, which he redshirted. Then he transferred to Wagner, where he won the long snapping job in camp. He held that role for two seasons. In 2019, he logged a pair of tackles and helped Seahawks place kicker Eric Silvester earn All-NEC honors.

The NEC postponed fall sports in 2020 because of COVID-19, but Daniel transferred to BC that winter with two seasons of eligibility remaining. Just like he did at Wagner, Daniel came into a new school and won the starting long snapping job, this time beating out a two-year starter.

Daniel scattered six tackles across his two seasons at BC and helped lead an Eagles special teams unit that finished 50th in SP+ in 2021. Daniel worked with place kicker Connor Lytton his first two years on the Heights. As a true freshman, Lytton converted 11-of-12 field goals (91.7%), the second-highest percentage of any ACC kicker with at least 10 attempts that season.

Daniel earned the program’s “Unsung Hero” senior award after the 2022 season.

Now, he’ll join Ohio State special teams coordinator Parker Fleming in reshaping the Buckeyes’ third phase of the game. Ohio State will have a new long snapper and place kicker in 2023.

Chic Harley put Ohio State football on the map over a century ago. He was a consensus All-American in 1916, 1917 and 1919. And he helped deliver the Buckeyes their first-ever win over Michigan.

Steven Carpenter is making a screenplay about Harley’s life story, which included World War I service in between his on-field success in Columbus.

In this week’s episode of The Tim May Show, Steven joins 40-year Ohio State football reporter Tim May to discuss Harley and his impact on the Buckeyes. Check it out:

With 3-point barrage in first half, Iowa runs away from Ohio State

Ohio State hoops has now lost 12 of its last 13 games and seven in a row. The Buckeyes (11-15, 3-12 Big Ten) kept pace with the high-octane Iowa Hawkeyes (17-9, 9-6) for the first 17 minutes of Thursday night’s game. Then Iowa closed the half on a 12-0 run that included four Hawkeyes 3-pointers.

Suddenly, a first half that featured 12 lead changes belonged to Iowa. Fran McCaffery’s Hawkeyes didn’t look back in the second half, handing Ohio State a 92-75 loss.

The 92 points are the most the Buckeyes have allowed this season. Ohio State, notably, lost center Zed Key in the second half after the junior re-aggravated his left shoulder sprain.
