Former Ohio State wide receiver Kyion Grayes transfers to Cal
COLUMBUS — Former Ohio State wide receiver Kyion Grayes committed to Cal Sunday. Grayes spent the first two seasons of his college career with the Buckeyes.
He arrived at Ohio State as the On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 104 overall prospect, and No. 19 wide receiver, in the 2022 recruiting class.
But he caught just one pass with the Buckeyes, and he didn’t see the field in 2023, per Pro Football Focus.
Grayes makes the move to Cal for the Golden Bears’ first season in the ACC. Grayes is one of three wideouts from Ohio State’s 2022 class to take his talents elsewhere.
A year before he hit the portal, classmates Caleb Burton and Kaleb Brown did the same.
Burton transferred to Auburn, where he caught 16 passes for 226 yards in his first year with the Tigers, including five passes for 78 yards in a Music City Bowl loss to Maryland.
Brown got off to a slow start at Iowa, but he jumpstarted his Hawkeyes career in Week 10, helping set up a game-winning field goal at Northwestern. In his final five games, he reeled in 21 catches for 192 yards and a score.

Grayes is hoping to make an even bigger impact his first season away from Ohio State. He averaged 19.9 yards per reception with 10 touchdowns as a junior at Chandler High School in Arizona. He then missed the first half of his senior season because of injury. Still, Grayes returned for five games and caught 21 passes for 388 yards and four touchdowns.
All 16 offensive of Grayes’ snaps with the Buckeyes took place during the 2022 season, his freshman year, according to PFF: He recorded 11 snaps against Toledo and five more against Iowa. His first career reception, which went for two yards versus Toledo, was his lone catch of his abbreviated Ohio State career.
Grayes is one of six Buckeyes players who entered the portal during the spring transfer window. The other five are safeties Cedrick Hawkins and Ja’Had Carter, linebacker Nigel Glover, offensive lineman Enokk Vimahi and running back Dallan Hayden.
