COLUMBUS —  Ohio State finally had to play through adversity last week. It just didn’t come on the field.

The Buckeyes smashed Maryland after finding out their best player, Chase Young, couldn’t be on the field with them. That was adversity, and it was a distraction.

Now, after the rout of Maryland, Ohio State will make a trip east to Rutgers, a team that is seemingly hapless and will surely test the Buckeyes discipline. Ohio State should beat Rutgers and could cover the historically large point spread, but coach Ryan Day isn’t viewing it as a mismatch. This, like every other road game, is a business trip.

“If we’re going to take anything for granted, we’re going to show up in Piscataway and win a game, that’s not going to happen,” Day said. “We have to do a good job. Those guys are going to play really, really hard.

“But at the end of the day, the focus is it comes back to us. What is your standard? We have to make sure we’re holding up that standard. We got a lot at stake here. We can’t put any of that stuff to risk. That’s something that the coaching staff has been hammering home with the players. To this point they’ve respected that. They have to continue to.”

That’s a typical approach from Day. But he and the Buckeyes certainly know how much better they are than Rutgers, which doesn’t have a conference win since Nov. 4, 2017. Ohio State also received some added motivation for this week when the College Football Playoff rankings came out Tuesday, revealing that the Buckeyes fell from their perch at the top despite winning by 59.

Ohio State will get superstar Chase Young back before the Penn State game next week. All the Buckeyes need to do is make quick work of Rutgers before they turn their attention to the tough final three games of the regular season. For anybody heading to the game, listening on the radio or watching on TV, Lettermen Row has all the viewing information that could possibly be needed to not miss a moment.
