Ryan Day on coaching rumors: 'This is all about winning a championship'

COLUMBUS — Like clockwork, any job that opens up around the country immediately has Ryan Day attacked to it as a possible candidate.

Head jobs from coast to coast. Speculation that he might one day want to return to the NFL level. Even speculation earlier in the season that he could be the coach-in-waiting if Urban Meyer ever winds up leaving Ohio State.

But that nonstop barrage appears to be news to the Buckeyes offensive coordinator — or he at least is doing fantastic work pretending to be unaware of his status as one of the hottest potential commodities on the market.

“I don’t read any of that stuff,” Day said. “I just know that any time you have opportunities, it’s because of the guys around you. More important than that, this is all about winning this championship. I’m so proud of the way these guys came out and played last week after everything we’ve been through this year, and nothing would be better than to go win this thing here and play really well in this championship game.

“The way they came out and finished this regular season with a game like that really speaks to who these kids are. Couldn’t be prouder. Now it’s all about winning this championship.”

The focus was clear for both Day and the Buckeyes overall as they left the practice field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Tuesday night. On the video screen hanging in the facility was a simple message: “What have you done today to win a championship?”

For Day, that means continuing to dial up new, innovative schemes to take advantage of all the talented personnel on hand for the Buckeyes. The attack unveiled a handful of new plays, formations and route concepts that picked apart Michigan and the top-ranked defense in the country — and there are still a couple pages of Day’s playbook left in reserve.

“We always have new wrinkles,” Day said. “We were able to execute them, I thought the scheme was good and we were able to put it on the field. At the end of the day, it comes down to execution.

“They’re all good plays when they work.”

Ryan Day was joined by defensive coordinator Greg Schiano and a handful of Buckeyes who met with the media to preview the Big Ten title game against Northwestern on Saturday.
