Top Buckeyes honored for performance in Akron win

Ohio State dominated Akron, and the Buckeyes made it look easy.

An offense showcase. Defensive scores and sacks. Special teams plays. It was a thorough win in every phase of the game.

For the win, the program made sure to name its players of the game Sunday, and the list was full of current and future Buckeyes stars.

On offense, wide receiver Garrett Wilson and right tackle Dawand Jones split the honor of player of the game. Wilson had four catches for 124 yards, while Jones had five knockdowns on the offensive line.

True freshman Tyleik Williams was named the defensive player of the game for having two tackles for loss and two sacks, showing he can be dominant despite his youth.

And punter Jesse Mirco was the special teams honoree for his three punts, two which were downed inside the 20, for an average of 49 yards per punt.

Ohio State dominated Akron, and it made sure to name the players of the game for the win.

Ohio State falls in AP Poll despite lop-sided win

Ohio State handled its business for the first time this season.

Sure, the Buckeyes already had a pair of wins before Saturday night, but they weren’t convincing in either win or the loss to Oregon.

The Buckeyes were dropped one spot to No. 11 in the latest AP Poll, which was released Sunday. Alabama retained the top spot. The Crimson Tide were followed by Georgia, Oregon, Penn State and Iowa in the top five.

Of course, the Buckeyes were supposed to destroy Akron, a program that has just two wins since the 2019 season. They’re certainly more talented than the Zips. Anything but a blowout would have been unacceptable.

Ohio State seems to be finding its way defensively and letting young players get reps on both sides of the ball. That’ll only help the Buckeyes down the road.

Week 4 AP Poll (Sept. 26)

  1. Alabama (58 first-place votes)
  2. Georgia (4)
  3. Oregon
  4. Penn State
  5. Iowa
