Buckeyes add quality control coach to defensive staff

Another new face will help lead an Ohio State defensive turnaround.

The Buckeyes have hired Miguel Patrick as a defensive quality control coach. Patrick announced it on his Twitter page Monday.

Prior to taking the job at Ohio State, Patrick was most recently the head coach at Crisp County High School in Georgia and powerhouse Cedar Grove High School, where he won a state title in 2019, before that.

Patrick has coached plenty of Division 1 prospects in his career, and his ties to Georgia high school football makes him an intriguing hire for the Buckeyes, who are always trying to make a recruiting push in the South.

Of course, he certainly can coach at a high level. And that’s why the Buckeyes are bringing him on the staff to help a defensive turnaround.

Lettermen Live hosted by Roosters

Ohio State is ready to get back on the practice field. Obviously Lettermen Live was just as excited to start talking about spring camp.

The crew was back together on Monday afternoon at Roosters to dive into a wide array of topics about the Buckeyes ahead of the first of 15 practices in March and April for the program. Coming off a season where the winning streak in The Game ended and the string of four-straight Big Ten titles was snapped, the urgency level has been ramped up in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

And that certainly trickles down to the Lettermen Lounge, where Nicole Cox of Roosters was joined by former Buckeyes Bobby Carpenter and Justin Zwick and Lettermen Row reporters Austin Ward and Jeremy Birmingham for a fun, casual conversation.

Major Ohio State target joins Birminology

AJ Hoffler, a four-star defensive end from the Woodward Academy (Atlanta), has been to Ohio State twice and knows the Buckeyes are the team to beat in his recruitment. Larry Johnson and Ohio State have been clear with him about their plans and he’s has no questions to answer about the Buckeyes anymore.

But there’s no hurry for him to make a college choice.

Spring has arrived but not much else has changed for Hoffler. He’s working on a visit to Ohio State for late March and is eager to keep growing his relationship with the Buckeyes.

What kind of role does his see for himself on the Ohio State defense? Does he see himself as an ambassador to Ohio State for young teammates visiting this month? Why does AJ Hoffler feel so strongly about the Buckeyes?

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound EDGE prospect with nearly 50 scholarship offers talks about his recruitment in the latest edition of Birminology from Lettermen Row with Jeremy Birmingham.
