Buckeyes commit Gabe Powers dominates in big win

MARYSVILLE — Gabe Powers did a little bit of everything Friday night.

The Marysville star and Ohio State linebacker pledge in the class of 2022 led his Monarchs out of the tunnel. He gave the pregame pep talk. Then he was all over the field defensively, having a hand in nearly every Marysville tackle of a Lancaster ball-carrier.

Oh, and he caught a touchdown pass, to boot. Powers, a two-way star who will enroll with the Buckeyes just months from now, dominated throughout Marysville’s 24-0 shutout win.

“It felt great,” Powers told Lettermen Row about finally getting back into action after last week’s contest was canceled. “It felt amazing. Packed stadium, couldn’t ask for a better home crowd.”

Powers was brilliant despite limited practice in the buildup to the season opener. He has been limited since injuring his ankle, a setback that sidelined him for some of camp.

Even as he was working his way back into game shape, Powers ability was evident. But that doesn’t mean he was at all satisfied with his performance.

“I was a little out of shape,” he said. “You could tell on the field, I was pretty winded. But I had to battle through it. Our team did a great job picking me up when I couldn’t pull through for them. A couple mistakes we have to pick up on the offensive side.”

Whether he was in shape or not, Gabe Powers dominated Friday night. And he led Marysville to a shutout win in every way.

Four-star defensive end includes Buckeyes in top-five list

Ohio State remains firmly in the mix for 4-star edge rusher Omari Abor.

The country’s No. 30-ranked prospect, Abor updated his top schools list on Friday afternoon just hours before the 6-foot-5, 255-pound defensive lineman and his Duncanville (Texas) teammates host national power Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) in a highly-anticipated battle between two of the country’s best prep programs.

Ohio State is joined on the list of contenders by Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M and Texas. Oklahoma, formerly a top contender, has fallen off the list.

Abor took an official visit to Ohio State on the weekend of June 4. He was one of more than a dozen official visitors for the Buckeyes during that time. A priority recruit for Ryan Day and Larry Johnson, Abor’s recruitment has slowed down a bit since June and is now narrowing heading into his senior season.
