Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise. Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Buckeyes open training camp, officially begin title chase

The Buckeyes went through winter workouts, mat drills and summer conditioning. That’s now all over.

Training camp is here, and Ohio State can now officially begin its chase of a national title it came so close to last year.

With an ongoing quarterback battle and a bevy of questions all over the roster, Ryan Day and the Buckeyes have plenty to answer in the next four weeks before they take on Minnesota on the road to open the season. The four-time defending Big Ten champs are gunning to make it back to the College Football Playoff for the third straight season under Day.

And that all starts Wednesday morning. Ohio State training camp is officially here.

Ohio State must re-visit quarterback recruiting

Quinn Ewers, the No. 1 overall prospect in the country, is enrolling at Ohio State a year earlier than planned. So Ohio State is now in need of a quarterback in the class of 2022.

Would in-state star and current Penn State commit Drew Allar be an option for the Buckeyes? Lettermen Row’s Jeremy Birmingham has more:

There’s now a need to recruit a 2022 quarterback, and it’d be huge surprise if Allar wasn’t the first one to receive a call from Ryan Day. The country’s top 33 quarterbacks are all committed, and Allar is one closest to home for the Buckeyes. Ohio State isn’t likely to offer a player committed to another school if it doesn’t feel they can pull off an eventual flip, though. Penn State has two quarterbacks committed in the Class of 2022 — the Buckeyes have none — so maybe that’s where the conversation starts.

I don’t expect that call to be as easy as folks would imagine. Allar grew up dreaming of playing for Ohio State in a way that most Ohio kids did, but he’s now helped the Nittany Lions build the country’s top-ranked recruiting class and is the centerpiece of James Franklin’s plans for Penn State’s future offense. Day and the Buckeyes have what seems a fairly clear path to him running out of the tunnel as the starting quarterback for Ohio State in 2024.

Buckeyes will sell jerseys with player names

Ohio State continues to push forward in the new era of college athletics.

The Buckeyes announced Tuesday morning that all student-athlete at Ohio State will have the opportunity to profit off their Name, Image and Likeness from a group licensing program. The Buckeyes athletic department and office of trademark and licensing have partnered with The Brand Group (TBG).

The deal with TBG allows for players to profit off of their jersey sales. TBG cannot guarantee NIL opportunities, only the marketplace will determine the demand. But fans will be able to purchase official team jerseys with names and numbers of current Buckeyes on them. Players will be able to profit immediately as long as they have joined the established group licensing program and as soon as TBG enters into trademark licenses agreements with Ohio State.

There will also be options down the road for trading cards, video games, bobbleheads and more thanks to this agreement between Ohio State and the players. Alumni jerseys will be sold, as well, through an Alumni Group Rights Program with some schools.

Ohio State pushed to make sure NIL legislation was legal in the State of Ohio before July 1. The Buckeyes accomplished that, getting an executive order passed through. And now they are making the most of the new era by providing as many opportunities possible to their athletes.
