Ryan Day spoke about the need for Ohio to pass NIL legislation.

Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise. Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

State of Ohio NIL bill passes Senate, moves to House

The state of Ohio is one step closer to passing a Name, Image and Likeness bill.

The bill, which ‘prohibits any college, university or intercollegiate athletic association from preventing a student from participating in athletics or otherwise punishing them as a result of earning compensation’, passed unanimously through the Ohio Senate on Wednesday, just a day after Ohio State head coach Ryan Day testified in favor of the bill. The NIL bill now heads to the Ohio House of Representatives for a vote in that chamber.

The Buckeyes have plenty to gain through NIL legislation, which could become law by July 1 if passed and signed by Governor Mike DeWine.

Ohio State players could soon earn money for their name, image and likeness. That is becoming more likely, especially after the vote to make it legal in the state of Ohio.

New Talking Stuff: The Ohio State Recruiting Podcast

Ohio State has hit full gear on the recruiting trail, providing plenty to chat about.

The Buckeyes recent recruiting weekend dominated most of the conversation. The No. 1 overall recruit out of Connecticut in the 2022 class, Wilfredo Aybar visited Columbus this past weekend. A defensive end, he’s reportedly reclassifying to the 2021 class, and Ohio State is the team to beat.

The other headline of the show is J.T. Tuimoloau impending visit. After months of not hearing any updates on the No. 3 player in the class of 2021, he’ll arrive in Columbus on Thursday night. The second-ranked defensive lineman and 24th-ranked all-time recruit, landing Tuimoloau would be a massive get for the Buckeyes. He’s already visited Washington and Southern California this month and has trips to Oregon and Alabama scheduled for the end of June. Hitting a home run this weekend is crucial for the Buckeyes.

Lettermen Row’s Jeremy Birmingham and Spencer Holbrook are discussing those topics and more in the latest episode of Talking Stuff, the recruiting podcast from Lettermen Row.

Buckeyes in lead for five-star cornerback

The battle for 5-star 2023 cornerback A.J. Harris looks like it could be a three-team race, and Ohio State might just be in the lead.

Ohio State, Notre Dame and Clemson each took a massive swing at the Glenwood School (Phenix City, Ala.) standout in the last week. The Buckeyes got their chance on Wednesday, making the most of it and leaving a major impression on the 6-foot-2, 180-pound rising-junior.

“I expected Ohio State to be a really good visit,” Harris told Lettermen Row’s Jeremy Birmingham. “But it was better than I thought it’d be. Everything about it.”

More than anything, Harris had been looking forward to connecting with Kerry Coombs. The Buckeyes defensive coordinator has clicked with the country’s No. 2-ranked cornerback since offering in March. That carried over into this visit and onto the field.

As a big-time prospect from Alabama and Georgia border, there’s been an early expectation that his recruitment would end up being an SEC battle. After a week that saw trips to Clemson, Notre Dame and Ohio State, that doesn’t entirely appear to be the case. There’s a bigger picture for Harris, and he seems to be narrowing in on a three-team battle.
