Sevyn Banks enters transfer portal, explores options for additional season

COLUMBUS — Sevyn Banks could be putting off the NFL Draft yet again.
But it doesn’t appear that the Ohio State senior will be continuing his career with the program either way.
Amidst injury uncertainty that will make it virtually impossible for Banks to participate in any combine workouts or the Ohio State Pro Day this spring, the veteran defensive back is exploring his options to potentially play another season at the collegiate level. Banks entered the transfer portal Thursday, a move that will likely be the clearest path to rejuvenating his professional stock given hurdles to do so with the Buckeyes.
“So [Sevyn Banks] graduated, and he’s moving on,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said on Monday. “I do have a meeting with him and his family [Tuesday].”
The path forward from that meeting is unclear, although it’s difficult at this point to imagine it will lead Banks back for a bonus fifth season in the Ohio State secondary.

Banks was widely expected to be moving on to the NFL after privately indicating those plans to the program ahead of Senior Day in November, which is why the Ohio State graduate elected to take part in the pregame festivities. But the nagging lower-body injury that kept him out of the last few games of the year has apparently thrown a wrench in those plans — and not being on campus for the start of the current semester with the Buckeyes would further complicate a return to potentially allow him to play next season without a waiver.
Those setbacks combined with something of a scholarship crunch for the Buckeyes as they’ve moved on with their roster planning with Banks having previously expressed his desire to head to the NFL.
That no longer appears to be the case. And while the door might not be completely shut on a return, Sevyn Banks is entering the transfer portal to explore other possible landing spots.
