Urban Meyer on USC struggles: ‘It does not compute to me’

COLUMBUS — Urban Meyer is regarded as one of the best coaches in the history of college football thanks to his incredible career at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State.

He’s set to be honored as such.

Meyer will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the hall and the National Football Foundation announced Wednesday ahead of the national title game Monday. Meyer will be the eighth Ohio State coach to go into the Hall of Fame.

He’s part of a class with legendary seven-time national-title winning coach at Alabama and LSU Nick Saban.

Meyer, of course, won the 2014 national championship at Ohio State as part of his seven-year run with the Buckeyes. During his time at Ohio State, he went 83-9 and 54-4 in Big Ten play. He had a sterling 7-0 career record against Michigan as the head coach of the Buckeyes and won three Big Ten titles (2014, 2017, 2018). He also won the 2018 Rose Bowl and 2017 Cotton Bowl with the Buckeyes.

But while Ohio State was the final stop of his college coaching career, it certainly wasn’t his most illustrious. Meyer went 65-15 in six seasons, winning the 2006 and 2008 BCS national championships with the Gators. He also won two Outback Bowls and a Sugar Bowl during his tenure.

During his two stops at Florida and Ohio State, Meyer’s programs developed NFL talent every year at nearly every position.

Before his time at Florida, Meyer went 22-2 in two seasons at Utah. He won a Liberty Bowl and a Fiesta Bowl during his Utes tenure. He arrived at Utah after going 17-6 in two seasons as the head coach at Bowling Green.

During all of those four stops, Meyer was always known as one of the great motivators and offensive minds of his era.

Meyer began his coaching career as a defensive backs coach for Cincinnati St. Xavier High School in 1985 before becoming a graduate assistant for Ohio State during the 1986 season under head coach Earle Bruce. He also had stops as an offensive assistant at Illinois State, Colorado State and Notre Dame before he was given the head whistle at Bowling Green.

That’s where his career took off with the Falcons, but he certainly made the most of his time at all four of his head-coaching stops during his college coaching career.

He’s one of the great coaches in the history of college football, and he’s an Ohio State legend for his national title win and record against Michigan.

Now he’s adding to his insane resume from his time coaching college football. Urban Meyer is going into the College Football Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2025.
