LAWRENCE, Kan. – It was the last trip to Lawrence for OU, and it was a battle the whole time. Ebbs and flows, back and forth. But not the ending the Sooners imagined.

An absolute bizarre game across the board. Mistakes galore from both teams, but KU ends the undefeated run for the Sooners as OU goes down 38-33.

Your at the buzzer takeaways.

No magic left

Dillon Gabriel couldn’t lead one more last-minute drive. With 3 seconds left, Gabriel’s pass was incomplete in the end zone.

Game over.

It just wasn’t a solid afternoon for OU’s passing attack. Gabriel did a great job of getting OU down the field to put itself in position.

Big completions to Drake Stoops and Brenen Thompson put the Sooners within striking distance. But OU had two shots from the 23 yard line and couldn’t come up with the answer.

KU fans stormed the field and brought down the goal post following the game.

Gabriel threw for 171 yards and ran for three touchdowns but also threw a pick-six to begin the game. OU also lost two fumbles.

Walker gives boost but banged up

It was Gavin Sawchuk who started at running back, but it was Tawee Walker who took control. After an in-house suspension last week, Walker returned with a fire against the Jayhawks.

He rushed for 97 yards in the first half and a touchdown. As he always does, he was able to keep moving forward, keep bouncing off tacklers and picking up extra yards.

It was not a day where Dillon Gabriel was going to put up huge numbers through the air, but he found some success on the ground.

Gabriel and Walker were able to keep KU off balance. Walker rushed for 146 yards before getting injured himself. Injuries were a big story from the day.

Delay a good thing for OU

Rain was in the forecast, but rain turned into a lightning delay. With 7:50 left in the second quarter and OU trailing 14-7, an hour-long delay began.

The crowd, incredibly loud to begin things, thinned out considerably. And the Sooners looked ready to roll right from the jump.

Less than two minutes later, it went from 14-7 for KU to 21-14 for the Sooners. Kip Lewis came up with a huge fumble recovery on kickoff that led to another Gabriel score. A muffed return, Robert Spears-Jennings made sure KU couldn’t recover. Lewis, the ball magnet, was there to take advantage.

KU fought back as well, to its credit, but the delay was a boost for OU in the short term.

Stutsman highlights injury report

Competitive depth, competitive depth, but the injuries are taking a toll for the Sooners. Cornerback Gentry Williams was among the key guys out Saturday.

And linebacker Danny Stutsman injured his lower leg at the end of the second quarter. Stutsman attempted to play the third quarter but took himself out after the initial defensive play. It was Lewis the rest of the way. And Lewis absolutely delivered when called upon, just wasn’t enough.

Up next

OU’s last trip to Oklahoma State for what could be a long, long time is officially here. Kickoff time and TV designation has not been announced just yet. Sooners (7-1 overall, 4-1) are going to need to show they can bounce back after a rough couple of weeks.
