Oklahoma coach Brent Venables poses for a photo wearing the Golden Hat trophy after the Red River Rivalry college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the University of Texas (UT) Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023. Oklahoma won 34-30.

OU came in at No. 9 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season Tuesday night.

But the rankings left some fans scratching their head, as Texas is ranked No. 7 despite the Sooners beating the Longhorns four weeks ago in the Cotton Bowl. OU is coming off a disappointing loss on the road at Kansas, which ranked No. 21 in the CFP rankings. Still, some thought Oklahoma would rank ahead of Texas given the head-to-head result.

The committee thought otherwise.

“A lot of discussion. You go back to — we want to get this right as we look at it,” said CFP Committee Chair Boo Corrigan when asked about the rankings by SoonerScoop.com. “A wonderful win by Oklahoma, last-second drive to win this game. When you factor in a two-loss Kansas team this past weekend, getting the win over Oklahoma, Kansas with the two losses to Texas and Oklahoma State, while they continue to improve and play better, body of work, if you will, looking at this, Texas over Alabama, winning there in Tuscaloosa, similar to Texas-Oklahoma but then add in the factor that Oklahoma lost that game to Kansas as well as a close game with UCF. But primarily the loss to Kansas.”

It’s clear the CFP Committee feels OU’s win over the Longhorns might have been a fluke. Corrigan cited the Sooners’ final drive against the Longhorns several times, leaving one to believe that they felt that OU was fortunate to win.

Either way, OU still appears to control its destiny to the playoffs. The Sooners have made the playoffs four teams before in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019, with a loss each year. Oklahoma will likely need some help with Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan, Florida State and Washington all being unbeaten. But if OU can win out and win the Big 12 Championship, it’ll be tough to keep the Sooners out.

And Oklahoma will have another chance at a ranked win this Saturday, facing No. 22 Oklahoma State in Stillwater. Meanwhile, Texas has a big matchup in Austin, facing No. 23 Kansas State. There’s a lot of football left to be played in Norman. OU will have plenty of chances to prove its worth to the committee.
