Crimson Countdown: No. 96 Davon Sears
The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.
Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 98 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.
Crimson Countdown: No. 96 Davon Sears
2022 stats (at Texas State): 15 tackles (eight solo), 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack.
2023 outlook: When the Sooners targeted Davon Sears from Texas State there were questions about a player that had modest output at a lower level of competition. However, defensive line coach Todd Bates always seemed a believer.
“He’s a guy that can get on top of the block, can rush the passer,” Bates said on April 10. “When I was evaluating his tape, that’s what I saw the pass rush ability. I feel like I can teach you all the run stuff; pass rush is a gift from God.”
There’s been no denying that since his arrival he has made a solid impression in pass rushing situations including a strong showing in the Red-White game on April 22.

What will be interesting to follow, and something Bates noted back in April as well, Sears is still learning to be more effective in the run game. Can he be a complete defensive tackle for the Sooners?
With the departure of Jalen Redmond and Oklahoma looking to find impact playmakers on the inside of the defensive line Sears seems to be a player who can find a legitimate role within the defense.
2023 Defensive Line Outlook
Fifth-year seniors Jordan Kelley and Isaiah Coe lead the way at defensive tackle. But Oklahoma did add a couple new guys in the transfer portal to the group in Notre Dame’s Jacob Lacey and Sears. Redshirt senior Jonah Laulu will also play defensive tackle this season, making the switch from defensive end. And true freshman Derrick LeBlanc will look to make an immediate impact in his first season. Defensive line coach Todd Bates is starting to rebuild OU’s defensive front after a lack of production last season.
