The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 10 Kip Lewis

2022 stats: 2 tackles, .5 tackle for loss

2023 outlook: Lewis isn’t expected to be a major contributor in 2023, but he could be if Oklahoma suffers any injuries. A redshirt freshman, Lewis has shown the potential to be a great WILL linebacker for the Sooners. Lewis is one of the more athletic linebackers Oklahoma has and he’s shown great instincts in the little time he has played. He led the spring game in tackles, giving people a glimpse of what he can be when his time eventually does come.

Still, the former Carthage High School standout will likely help on special teams and could be in line to be Danny Stutsman’s backup this season.

“(Kip) Lewis, we play the same position and it’s been great to see a guy like that where his instincts are just off the chart,” Stutsman said of Lewis. “He just has a nose for the football. I kind of see myself when I look at a guy like that. Someone I’ll always want to take under my wing and kind of be his lifeline.”

A three-star prospect, Lewis totaled 108 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and six sacks his senior season at Carthage. He also helped Carthage win back-to-back state titles in his sophomore and junior seasons.

2023 inside linebacker outlook

Oklahoma isn’t lacking talent at inside linebacker. But it does lack experience. Junior Danny Stutsman returns as last year’s starter at WILL linebacker, while redshirt freshman Kobie McKenzie and sophomore Jaren Kanak battle for the MIKE spot. Sophomore Kip Lewis could also be a contributor after an impressive spring. And the Sooners added a linebacker in the transfer portal in Ferris State’s Konnor Near. This group has a lot to prove in 2023 – especially Stutsman – but it does appear to have the talent and depth to find success.
