Crimson Countdown: No. 15 Brenen Thompson
The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.
Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.
Crimson Countdown: No. 15 Brenen Thompson
2022 stats: Played in nine games at Texas with one reception for 32 yards.
2023 outlook:
Nine days after entering the transfer portal, Brenen Thompson was headed north of the Red River and it was a reunion of sorts. After appearing in nine games as a true freshman with just one reception for the Longhorns a season ago, Thompson was looking for a new home. It didn’t take long for a reunion, of sorts, with Sooners wide receiver coach Emmett Jones.
“Obviously with every staff, there’s a different message and there’s a different way to go about things. For Venables and for coach (Emmett) Jones and coach (Jeff) Lebby and all those guys it was, ‘If you’re going to come here, we’re going to come here and we’re going to try to win. Not try to win, but we’re going to win.’ I put my career in their hands as I think they definitely have the best plan installed for me.”

Thompson was starting to find his footing in the preseason prior to an injury that has hampered him the last week. Make no doubts about it. When healthy, Thompson brings with him elite track speed. A constant characteristic of the Sooners wide out room.
2023 wide receiver outlook:
Who’s going to step up? That seems to be one of the biggest questions that follows Team 129. There’s a belief Jalil Farooq will slide into the No. 1 role followed by Drake Stoops and Gavin Freeman. Who’s got next? Michigan transfer Andrel Anthony has emerged through preseason camp. Nic Anderson and Jayden Gibson have shown some promise of late. True freshman Jaquaize Pettaway has been making a name for himself since arriving this summer. Competitive depth continues to be a talking point. Wide receiver might be the team’s best example.
