The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2024 Oklahoma football season. Fans have been waiting for what feels like forever with this one. The Sooners are finally and officially joining the SEC.

The 2023 season was a rebound one for head coach Brent Venables, getting the program back to its standard. OU went 10-3 in Venables’ second season, now it’s time for year No. 3.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 23 Eli Bowen

2023 stats: N/A.

2024 outlook:

You don’t count a Bowen out, that’s for sure. But it’s hard to see if Eli Bown can be a legitimate player for the 2024 season.

You did hear the younger Bowen’s name a few times during spring practice, and he did get to change his number from No. 36 to No. 23.

Think it’s pretty obvious the special teams units will be littered by the Bowen name. Both Peyton and Eli should see some significant run in that department. The question will simply be if Eli is already in a spot to contribute to the defense as well?

2024 cornerback outlook

The cornerback room is another unit that has more depth than usual for the Sooners. Junior Gentry Williams returns for his third season and is expected to start at one spot, if he’s healthy. There are several players, though, pushing Williams for one of the two starting spots, including new San Diego State transfer Dez Malone and Louisville transfer Kani Walker, who is now in his third year in Norman. Young guys Jacobe Johnson and Makari Vickers have also been impressive, hoping to have a bigger role in 2024.
