Crimson Countdown: No. 32 R Mason Thomas
2023 stats: 9 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack
2024 outlook: After struggling with injuries last season, many expect R Mason Thomas to be a break out player for the Sooners in 2024. Thomas sprained both his ankles last season, starting in fall camp, and never truly recovered. But when he’s been healthy, he’s considered maybe OU’s best pass rusher. If Oklahoma is to have the elite defense it thinks it can have, Thomas will have to not only stay healthy, but prove he is that type of player on the edge.
2024 defensive end outlook
OU has a good mix of experience and talent at the defensive end position in 2024. The old guys for the Sooners are Ethan Downs, Trace Ford and Miami Ohio transfer Caiden Woullard. Downs is the unquestioned leader of the group, entering his fourth and final season for OU. But OU does have a host of young guys looking to contribute and possibly start. R Mason Thomas and PJ Adebawore both feel like players who could have breakout seasons in Norman. And freshmen Nigel Smith and Danny Okoye are hoping to find some sort role in 2024.
