The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2024 Oklahoma football season. Fans have been waiting for what feels like forever with this one. The Sooners are finally and officially joining the SEC.

The 2023 season was a rebound one for head coach Brent Venables, getting the program back to its standard. OU went 10-3 in Venables’ second season, now it’s time for year No. 3.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 4 Dez Malone

2023 stats: Started all 12 games for San Diego State, 47 tackles, two tackles for loss, sack, seven PBUs, interception.

2024 outlook:

Is Malone good enough to be a starter? Point blank, the biggest question. You figure that’s the reason someone like Malone decides to transfer from SDSU to OU. A chance to show what he can do at the elite level.

You can hear his confidence in preseason camp. No longer trying to find his way through things. He knows what he is doing and has plenty of experience and production to back that up.

Malone has some really nice strength for a cornerback, and we’ll see how he is able to get that in the game. Might be a sneaky pick for biggest portal addition for the Sooners.

2024 cornerback outlook

The cornerback room is another unit that has more depth than usual for the Sooners. Junior Gentry Williams returns for his third season and is expected to start at one spot, if he’s healthy. There are several players though pushing Williams for one of the two starting spots, including new San Diego State transfer Dez Malone and Louisville transfer Kani Walker, who is now in his third year in Norman. Young guys Jacobe Johnson and Makari Vickers have also been impressive, hoping to have a bigger role in 2024.
