The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 98 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 69 Nate Anderson

2022 stats: Played four games in a reserve role.

2023 outlook:

Not sure it was the role Anderson envisioned when he arrived in Norman, but he has become a depth piece at the center position.

Hurting his cause has been OU going into the portal at his spot with some experience. Two years ago, it was Robert Congel (Arizona). This time around, it’s Troy Everett (Appalachian State).

Anderson was expected to be a pretty big contributor coming out of high school, and he still has time to make it happen. He redshirted in 2020. He didn’t play in 2021. Anderson saw the first action of his career in 2022 with four games.

With his brother committing to Tennessee for the 2024 class, it will be intriguing to see what happens with Nate during this season. Can he navigate his way to more playing time?

2023 interior offensive line outlook

Oklahoma returns some good production on the interior offensive line in senior center Andrew Raym and redshirt senior McKade Mettauer. But it also welcomes a couple new players from the transfer portal in Miami Ohio’s Caleb Shaffer and Appalachian State’s Troy Everett. There are also high expectations for redshirt sophomore Savion Byrd, who made is first start in the Cheez-It Bowl to end last season. While Raym and Mettauer return, it feels as though all three interior spots could be up for grabs this fall.
