The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.
Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 98 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.
Crimson Countdown: No. 72 McKade Mettauer
2022 stats: 13 starts
2023 outlook: Mettauer, a redshirt senior, returns as one of Oklahoma’s most veteran players. The California transfer started 13 games last season, 12 of which came at left guard. His lone game at right guard came against Florida State. And he might be at right guard this fall, depending on how things shake out up front. He will have some competition though, with Oklahoma adding several interior offensive linemen from the transfer portal.

While Mettauer certainly isn’t the most talented offensive lineman, he does offer experience for a relatively young offensive line. He was a three-year starter at Cal, starting 29 games before transferring to Oklahoma last year. And he’s started to take on more of a leadership role, as he enters his second season in Norman.
2023 interior offensive linemen outlook
Oklahoma returns some good production on the interior offensive line in senior center Andrew Raym and redshirt senior McKade Mettauer. But it also welcomes a couple new players from the transfer portal in Miami Ohio’s Caleb Shaffer and Appalachian State’s Troy Everett. There are also high expectations for redshirt sophomore Savion Byrd, who made is first start in the Cheez-It Bowl to end last season. While Raym and Mettauer return, it feels as though all three interior spots could be up for grabs this fall.
