Crimson countdown: No. 80 Rondell Bothroyd
The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.
Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 98 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.
Crimson countdown: No. 80 Rondell Bothroyd
2022 stats: 30 tackles, six sacks, two forced fumbles, fumble recovery.
2023 outlook:
This is the one, right? This is the impact transfer OU needs to be every bit as good as hoped. Bothroyd can do it. You don’t get 14 sacks in two seasons at the Power 5 level without being legitimate.
It will be interesting to see if OU tinkers with how it uses Bothroyd. He was quick to say the Sooners might move him inside every now and then. Was that just spring talk? Or is it something that can happen.

Bothroyd brings the type of experience and production that has been missing from the Sooners at the position. If he’s as good in Norman as he was at Wake Forest, the Sooners have found themselves one heck of a one-year player.
He should be a factor on the field and should be a great voice off the field.
2023 defensive end outlook
The Sooners made several additions to the defensive end room following the 2022 season. In the transfer portal, Oklahoma landed Wake Forest’s Rondell Bothroyd and Oklahoma State’s Trace Ford. Both figure to be key contributors. OU also welcomes true freshman Adepoju Adebawore, who was one of the most sought-after recruits in the country in the 2023 class. Senior Reggie Grimes, junior Ethan Downs and sophomore R Mason Thomas all return as well, giving OU plenty of depth on the edge.
