D.J. Graham (9) runs drills during an OU football practice in Norman, Okla., on Monday, Aug. 7, 2023.

The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown – No. 9 D.J. Graham

2022 stats:

Played in nine games, making one start at cornerback recording 14 tackles and two pass breakups before moving to wide receiver for remainder of season.

2023 outlook:

Could a position change be the key to unlocking D.J. Graham? He has plenty of ball skills. Just open up social media this afternoon and you’ll find his one handed interception versus Nebraska

Graham’s move to wide receiver wasn’t necessarily a surprise. In high school he starred at Oklahoma’s summer camp as a wide receiver prospect before starting his career on the defensive side of the ball.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do after every season of my college career,” Graham said of the position switch last season. “But I finally fessed up and said I can’t do this no more. This is what I want to do. This has always been my dream. It’s better late than never.”

A development that would be good news for a position that is looking for added playmakers in 2023.

2023 wide receiver outlook:

Oklahoma’s wide receiver unit is a position of intrigue heading into the season. Jalil Farooq slides into the No.1 role with Drake Stoops and Gavin Freeman proven outlets for Dillon Gabriel. But who else makes out that receiver corps? Andrel Anthony and freshman Jaquiaze Pettaway have excelled during preseason camp. LV Bunkley-Shelton is looking for opportunity in his second season after joining the program by way of a transfer from Arizona State. Nic Anderson and Jayden Gibson are primed to take the next step during their second seasons in Norman. Brenen Thompson has been hampered with injury throughout early portions of camp but should figure into the mix before season’s end.
