Cydney Sanders homers twice, OU routs St. Thomas

It’s not unusual for an OU softball player to hit two home runs in the same game. We’ve seen enough power throughout the years to know that can happen.
But how about the same inning? That’s what Cydney Sanders was able to accomplish Thursday evening. Sanders hit two bombs in the second inning en route to a 12-4 run-rule (5 innings) victory for the Sooners against St. Thomas on Thursday in the Okana Invitational at Love’s Field.
Sanders began the bottom of the second with a solo shot to give OU a 1-0 lead. By the time she had hit a three-run dinger later in the frame, it capped off an eight-run second inning.
OU only scored in two innings, the second and fourth. But the Sooners made them count. Freshman Sydney Barker belted a three-run home run in the fourth. Then freshman Corri Hicks hit a long ball for the second straight game as she tries to find her footing.
A weird night with the schedule change. The game was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday before being moved Thursday morning to the evening because of the expected inclement weather hitting the state Friday.

So weird that head coach Patty Gasso wasn’t even in attendance. Gasso had previously agreed to a speaking engagement and decided to keep her word. Instead, it was JT Gasso calling the shots from the third base line.
Kierston Deal (two scoreless innings), Isabella Smith (two innings, one run) and Paytn Monticelli (one inning, three runs) wrapped things up for OU to earn its 33rd victory this season.

No. 3-ranked OU (33-3, 9-3 SEC) is done with St. Thomas and hopeful to get two games in against Central Florida. That first one is set for 7 p.m. pitch Friday. The Invitational finale is 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Everything this weekend is, obviously, subject to change because of the rain.
