OU is ready for the second half of the season, and its quarterback will front and center the rest of the way. It starts with being named a team captain against a familiar foe.

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel will be one of the five captains for the Sooners and head coach Brent Venables this week. It just so happens, of course, that Central Florida is coming to town. Gabriel spent his first three seasons at UCF. Gabriel said Monday night he’s excited to play his former team.

Joining Gabriel will be linebacker Shane Whitter and then transfers Reggie Pearson (Texas Tech), Caleb Shaffer (Miami (Ohio)) and Da’Jon Terry (Tennessee).

It’s interesting to see the transfers take such a big role in the program. It’s something they’re proud of, and they know they have to keep putting in the work.

“First off, you know you always gotta have high expectations for yourself,” said Terry last week. “So, I mean, you always want to have that standard for yourself. So, I mean it’s not surprising but you always want to have that high standard for yourself.”

“Yes sir. I’d say, like he definitely like recruited great guys with great character and great morals and people that were raised right. So, it was easy for everybody to come in as one, for real.”

Whitter has a pivotal role on special teams, while the three transfers had to play their part in the win vs. Texas. Pearson is a strong rotational player at safety. Terry earned his first sack of the season vs. UT. Then Shaffer was forced into action at left guard after the injury to McKade Mettauer.

The Sooners (6-0 overall, 3-0) are coming off their bye week and welcome UCF (3-3 overall, 0-3) to Norman 11 a.m. on ABC. OU’s game at Kansas next weekend will also be at 11 a.m., on FOX for Big Noon Kickoff.
