Less than a week away from the start of OU basketball, time to get a real first look. Head coach Porter Moser wanted to go through a traditional game routine, so we get a free scrimmage out of it.

The OU scrimmage is 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Lloyd Noble Center. The format is TBD, but wouldn’t expect it to be super long since it’s an intrasquad battle.

OU did have two of the secret scrimmages in recent weeks. The Sooners were downed by Kansas State (72-63) and Marquette (87-77).

The overall feeling is positive, and those are two pretty good squads to go against. What Wednesday will give OU fans the first chance to really see? Well, did the Sooners find their shooters?

“I think we’ll be able to shoot better,” said Moser last week. “We got to hang our hat on creating offense with our defense. I’ve said that a lot. I think we’re going to be deeper. Like I said earlier, I don’t know what my eight-man rotation is. Sometimes, you look at it like, ‘I know my eight-man rotation because nine, 10, 11, 12 can’t play.’ That’s the facts, sometimes.

“I don’t know that, because I feel right now, coaching component, at 10 or 11. Now, it’s hard to do that, but I think we’re deeper. I think we’re going to go deeper into the bench with experience because we’re old. We got some older guys coming off the bench. Sometimes you get four, five freshmen. We have some good freshmen, but we got some older guys as well.”

There aren’t any major injuries for OU, outside of the obvious one with Jeff Nwankwo (torn Achilles). Just a couple of guys on minutes’ restrictions.

“Right now, normal bumps and bruises,” Moser said. “No one that is out with anything. We watch Brycen Goodine a lot with his minutes. Watch Mo with his minutes. They both had offseason surgeries, so we watch them. Other than that, we’ve been healthy.”

Sam Godwin will miss the scrimmage, said Moser, as he is in concussion protocol.

OU begins the season 8 p.m. Monday against Lindenwood at the LNC.
