Gabriel, Laulu, Raym, Washington, Rouse named Week 2 OU captains
OU head coach Brent Venables explained the weekly captains mindset before. The goal is not to just have a captain’s mindset for one week, and then that’s it.
The goal is to show it every week. For guys to work hard to earn it every week, and another bunch of five were named Monday.
Quarterback Dillon Gabriel, cornerback Woodi Washington, defensive tackle Jonah Laulu and offensive linemen Walter Rouse and Andrew Raym have the honor for Week 2.
The Sooners host SMU (1-0) at 5 p.m. Saturday.
The captains
Washington has been asked about what it’s like being the ‘old man’ in the cornerback room. He’s OK with it.
“I love it,” Washington said. “Being able to lead those guys and show them everything I’ve been through as a player and witnessed in the game or in the film room. I’m showing them all the ropes. I’m a vet guy – the guy who has played ball. I’m showing them everything and teaching them everything that I’ve been through.”

It continues to show the transformation with Laulu. From sparingly used defensive end to a representative at media day and making the move to defensive tackle.
He talked about how the transfers are going to add so much to the room.
“When you think about it, getting these new transfers added that competitive stamina because now we have more experienced players,” Laulu said. “People that know what they’re doing and play to the best of their ability and elevate the whole defense.
“That was the whole purpose of coaches bringing in all these new people, so the whole team rises together. It adds that competition whether it’s in practice or on the field, having those guys to come in and win. Say someone gets beat up or somebody’s tired from like special teams, we have those guys to step up and play.”
