Getting to know the Sooners: Jalon Moore
Sooners basketball season is just around the corner, and it’s OK if you need a primer of who these guys are. Now in year No. 3 at Oklahoma, head coach Porter Moser is confident the program has checked all the boxes to make an NCAA run.
Here is a brief overview of some of the key pieces for OU for the 2023-24 season.
OU begins its season next Monday vs. Central Michigan in Norman.
Forward Jalon Moore – Junior
Moore is in his first season at OU. He is a transfer from Georgia Tech, who took a leap of faith in the transfer portal. Everybody does that in some regard, but the difference with Moore is he waited so long before entering.
Once he entered just before the window closed, he had no idea what kind of interest he was going to get. But it was the perfect timing for OU after the Sooners suffered an unexpected blow with Jalen Hill leaving. Moore found his home, and the Sooners had an athletic big.
What to expect?
Athletic ability. Say it again, athletic ability. It’s something the OU coaches were so fired up about with Moore in the summer. Nothing has changed since then.
Moore is someone who can play above the rim and will play above the rim. He’s also someone with Power Five experience, so you don’t imagine he’ll be overwhelmed by his new environment.

Moore should be fighting for a starting spot, but it’s tough to know at this point what that starting five will look like. What it will look like, and how it might change.
Moser says
“It wasn’t like we knew his people or anything. We watched a lot of film. Talked to his old coaches. He started playing basketball late in his life. Wasn’t like he was in AAU since he was 6. He started late in his life in his high school career. He started a lot of games at Georgia Tech. Averaged like nine points per game. But he is — he’s as athletic as anybody in the Big 12. As anybody in the country. He’s 6-6, 225. Elite athlete. Elite character. He goes so hard sometimes he gets too sped up and we’re trying to have him change speeds a lot. Recognize what’s going on a little bit. He’s been our leading rebounder since the day we walked in.
“He finds a way to make plays. He’s really good on-ball defender. He’s very active. And he’s just continuing to learn our defensive system. He’s continuing to learn our offensive system. But you will notice Jalon Moore when he plays. He’s all over the place. He’s running. You might notice him for two mistakes, but you’re gonna notice him for two offensive rebounds, a lob dunk, a steal, a fast break layup. He’s involved because he goes hard and he’s an exceptional athlete.”
