How much is Porter Moser's buyout?

After another disappointing loss Saturday against LSU, OU men’s basketball coach Porter Moser is on the hot seat.
So how much will it cost the Sooners if they choose to move on from Moser? SoonerScoop.com obtained Moser’s contract and did the math to figure out his buyout.
If Oklahoma fires Moser without cause, it will owe him 75% of his remaining salary. His salary consists of a base salary ($300,000), an annual stay benefit ($200,000) and an additional salary that increases by $100,000 year over year ($2,800,000). His contract has three years remaining. This number comes out to be approximately $7.65 million.
Here’s how it adds up:
- 2026: $300k (base) + $200k (stay benefit) + $2.8M (additional salary) = $3.3M
- 2027: $300k (base) + $200k (stay benefit) + $2.9M (additional salary) = $3.4M
- 2028: $300k (base) + $200k (stay benefit) + $3M (additional salary) = $3.5M
- Total salary remaining: $10.2M X .75 = $7.65M
If Moser is fired, OU would pay that $7.65 million pro-rata monthly until June 30, 2028 — the end of his current contract. That means Oklahoma would not have to pay Moser one lump sum. If Moser receives a full-time job elsewhere during that period, the Sooners would not have to pay the remainder of the buyout. Meaning, that OU might not have to pay that entire amount.

Moser has not received a contract extension since the summer of 2022 when he was extended from 2026 to 2028. Last year, Moser only received a $100,000 raise that had previously been worked into his contract. His buyout a season ago was $10.2 million, dropping considerably this year.
With only six games remaining this season, Moser has little time to turn things around. If the Sooners miss the NCAA Tournament, it will be the first time since 1978 that the program didn’t make the tourney in four consecutive seasons.
