Oklahoma’s weekend got a little bit tougher Thursday night with the release of the weekly SEC availability report for this weekend’s series against No. 17 Vanderbilt.

Included on it was Friday night starter, Kyson Witherspoon, who is expected to miss his regularly scheduled start in the Sooners series opener versus the Commodores. Sources tell SoonerScoop.com there’s a possibility Witherspoon could pitch this weekend, but it won’t be Friday night while he is dealing with back spasms. He was officially listed as out.

Witherspoon, a preseason All-SEC selection and All-American candidate, has been excellent in the Friday night role for Oklahoma this season. He has posted a 5-2 record in eight starts and a 68-to-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The 68 strikeouts ranks No. 7 nationally and No. 3 amongst SEC hurlers. The Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List selection struck out four over six innings of work last Thursday in a 2-0 loss to No. 3 LSU.

Oklahoma will turn to left-hander Cade Crossland on Friday and Malachi Witherspoon on Sunday. Malachi Witherspoon heads into the weekend off one of his best starts of the year. ln his last start, he threw six innings and struck out four in the series finale versus LSU.

Certainly not the best news for Oklahoma heading into a pivotal weekend while on its longest losing streak of the season. But it’s also not the worst. There’s an expectation this is more on the cautionary side more than a long-term issue.

The Sooners look to snap their four-game home skid, starting Friday night at 7 p.m.
