Oklahoma has work to do in 2023.

The Sooners ranked 20th in the first AP Poll of the 2023 season. It’s only the fourth time since 2000 that Oklahoma is ranked outside the top 10 in the preseason poll. Oklahoma was No. 19 in 2000, No. 16 in 2013, and No. 19 in 2015. Oklahoma also ranked No. 19 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, the same ranking the Sooners had in 2000.

The other Big 12 schools ranked in the AP Poll were Texas at No. 11, Kansas State at No. 16, and TCU at No. 17. Texas is the favorite to win the conference, with Kansas State at second and OU at third. Texas and TCU are the only ranked teams on Oklahoma’s schedule currently.

Brent Venables and Oklahoma are looking to have a bounce-back season in Norman, after a disappointing 6-7 first year. OU still has high expectations this year despite the No. 20 ranking, with many believing it can compete for a Big 12 title.
