It did not take long for OU basketball coach Porter Moser to fill the only opening on the staff. Just a couple of days removed from it being known publicly that the Sooners needed a new strength and conditioning coach, OU has its guy.

With an NBA background, too. Moser announced Ty Terrell will be taking over the duties. Former coach Bryce Daub announced he was leaving Wednesday to take a role with the Charlotte Hornets.

Now OU dips into the NBA waters and the Washington Wizards.

Terrell joins the Sooners after two years as the senior director of athletic performance for the Washington Wizards. That also included the Mystics and Capital City Go-Go – the G League affiliate of the Wizards. Before his move to Washington, he spent five years as the assistant performance coach for the Atlanta Hawks. There? He worked with Oklahoma director of player development and assistant coach Paul Jesperson.

“Ty brings a tremendous amount of experience from the highest level after spending the last seven seasons between the Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards, and knows what it takes to make our student-athletes NBA ready,” said Moser in a press release. “Our vision and values are aligned, and I am excited for him to make an immediate impact with our student-athletes. We are excited to welcome him to our OU family.”

Terrell’s Take

While in the nation’s capital, Terrell oversaw all facets of game day, practice and postgame routines and implemented offseason training programs. Terrell collaborated with additional areas of support, including nutrition, mental health and sleep specialists, further developing a holistic approach to athlete welfare.

“After speaking with the basketball staff at Oklahoma, it was clear that the program has excellent people, a defined vision and an abundance of resources,” said Terrell. “I am thrilled to work with Porter Moser and the rest of the staff to develop and help our student-athletes grow on and off the court. I am thankful for the opportunity and excited to get to work.”

It truly will be a new era as Daub had been the strength and conditioning coach at OU since 2015.
