OU basketball gotta rest up, get better, get ready for stretch run
OU basketball finally gets that mid-week bye. Unfortunately, it might be a week too late, both in the standings and physically.
A rough week for the Sooners as OU dropped double-digit games at Baylor and home vs. Kansas. Even tougher week trying to navigate the outings without John Hugley (knee) and Rivaldo Soares (ankle) getting injured in the final minutes in Waco.
No, nobody is saying the Sooners are on the bubble or anything. At least not yet. Still solidly around a No. 7 or No. 8 seed in recent tournament projections. But at 18-8 overall and 6-7 in the Big 12, have to take advantage of opportunities.
The biggest one this week? Ha, rest.
“We’re going to navigate the week,” said head coach Porter Moser when asked by SoonerScoop. “It’s our bye week and we’ve been playing every three days since Christmas, as everyone else has. So we’ve got to go on a mission. Gotta go on a mission to get better. Gotta go on a mission to get fresh and healthy.
“And tons to look forward to these final five games. And we want to get better this week. We had a really poor second half. A really poor second half. Shooting it. Taking care of it. Rebounding it. We’ve got to go on a mission this week to get fresh and get better.”

You hate to have a week off after only making four field goals in the second half against the Jayhawks, being outscored 38-23 in the second half.
But if there’s a chance Soares and Hugley can return healthy down the stretch, then you accept last week’s pain for future success.
Rest up, get better and a must-win Bedlam in Stillwater looms in the distance.
Team of the Week
We got a 1a. and 1b. situation with TCU and Iowa State. Two teams proving different things. The Frogs had to show they’re still a solid NCAA tournament team. And Jameer Nelson Jr’s three-pointer to win at Kansas State did that. Iowa State is showing it can win the whole thing. ISU at Houston is appointment viewing Monday night. First place in the conference on the line.
Up next
A week to rest for the Bedlam challenge ahead. Moser has never won in Stillwater. Oklahoma State is 10-5 at home, but it’s an interesting week. OSU is at Cincinnati on Wednesday night, while OU, of course, is just chilling. The Bearcats might take a whole heck of a lot out of the Cowboys heading into Bedlam. Wednesday night to Saturday afternoon transition.
