OU basketball ranked No. 25 in new AP poll
OU head coach Porter Moser has talked about how much more athletic this year’s team is and how much longer and tougher they are.
Well, they have been so far. And now the Sooners have been rewarded with the No. 25 ranking in the new AP poll released Monday afternoon.
Oklahoma is 6-0 and is coming off a dramatic 72-70 victory against then-No. 23 USC in San Diego on Friday afternoon.
The 6-0 start is the Sooners’ best mark since 2015-16 when OU went to the Final Four. This year’s group still has a lot of work to do in that regard and in the rankings as the Buddy Hield-led squad reached No. 1 in the nation.
For now? Being the first ranked team under Moser at OU is something to build on.
“No, you’re constantly learning about your team as you go through the year,” said Moser last week “Our guys, I mean, they’re here at Oklahoma because they want to — I mean, we’re in the best conference in the country in the Big 12. I mean, there’s nothing like it. The last couple of years, our nonconference, we’ve had the No., what, 2? and the No. 7 hardest conference, hardest schedule in the country.

“So this is why they’re here. They know we’re gonna play these type of games and this is where, you know, you gotta continue to get better. I wanna see — when you ask me what I’m looking for — every one of these games we’ve played so far we’ve tried to get better and that’s what we hope to do against Iowa.”
OU smoked Iowa on Thanksgiving and then followed that with Otega Oweh’s game-winner against the Trojans.
The Sooners return to Norman but not the Lloyd Noble Center on Thursday evening. Moser is bringing the team to McCasland Field House for a students-only contest against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
OU is one of six Big 12 teams in the rankings, joining No. 19 BYU, No. 16 Texas, No. 9 Baylor, No. 6 Houston and No. 5 Kansas.
