Reality check is a little too strong a term for OU basketball, but it might not be far off. The Sooners learned it’s going to be the grind everybody expects in the SEC.

OU simply had no answer for Alabama’s size in a 107-79 defeat Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. Nobody, hopefully, is hitting the panic button after OU’s first defeat. However, size issues could be a concern throughout the rest of the season.

Alabama stifled star freshman Jeremiah Fears in the first half. The Sooners will have to adjust to that the rest of the way.

Following the defeat, OU takes a little dip in the polls, now at No. 17 in the AP poll and No. 16 in the coaches poll. OU fell from the ranks of the undefeated. No. 1 Tennessee stands alone in that regard now.

Back home

Now? OU is headed back to Lloyd Noble Center for its SEC home opener. An old rival now a familiar foe again with No. 9/10 Texas A&M coming to Norman 8 p.m. Wednesday.

“Just hoping that this LNC becomes one of those venues, that they say, is really hard to play against,” head coach Porter Moser said. “I’ve seen it, and it can get loud. But you do. It’s going to be that hard to hear and do that on the road. We gotta make the LNC the same thing. The same way. But as a player, whether you’re home or away, you play the game the same way. I’ve always said this.

“You guys have heard me say this about Coach Majerus, he really didn’t make a big deal about home or away. You play the game the same way, you play it the right way. Gotta defend, you gotta rebound, you gotta take care of the ball. You gotta share it. We can’t be thinking of we’re on the road, we’re at home. We gotta be playing the right way. Focusing on us. But secondarily, you hope we got that kind of atmosphere.”
