OU captains for Week 2: Ethan Downs, Jovantae Barnes, Kendel Dolby, Zach Schmit, Jake Roberts
Another week, another set of OU captains. Head coach Brent Venables has been adamant about doing things this way although it still catches some fans off guard.
Your OU captains for Houston? Defensive end Ethan Downs, running back Jovantae Barnes, Cheetah linebacker Kendel Dolby, kicker Zach Schmit and tight end Jake Roberts.
“Week-to-week, keeps things fresh and helps me develop, our coaches as well, develop the depth of leadership,” said Venables last week. “Your alphas will always be your alphas because alphas do what alphas do. Winners do what winners do. They’re going to always lead. My job is to create an environment where we can develop the depth of leadership.
“The next group of guys who are also worthy although they may not show up in the stat sheet and nobody writes about them. This is their opportunity to lead in their way and be ready. To be ready for that next phase and the burden of the responsibility that comes along with that.”
It was a huge honor for Bauer Sharp, who had the distinction last week.
“I almost started crying… I’ve still got a lot more work to do, a lot more goals to accomplish,” Sharp said. “But that was just the start and it was awesome. Praise the Lord.”

Keltner earns first OU honor in SEC
The first OU player to earn an SEC Player of the Week honor? Kicker Tyler Keltner. Yep, kicker. Keltner was brilliant in his first game as a Sooner.
Keltner made field goals from 50, 42 and 24 yards.
“I was sent out for three kicks and I’m never going to go into a kick thinking I’m going to miss, so I did what Coach sent me out there to do,” Keltner said. “But to be a part of OU history like that and to just kind of wear that, it’s really special and something that I’d never imagined would happen.
“The guys really showed up on (Friday). They blocked their butts off for me. We just had a really good game.”
