OU captains named for regular season finale: Arnold, Everett, Downs, Williams, Stutsman, Elzinga
OU isn’t sweating being bowl eligible. And you know those captains were a pretty big reason why. The Sooners look to end the regular season with back-to-back wins.
Leading the charge to Baton Rouge? Quarterback Jackson Arnold, center Troy Everett, defensive end Ethan Downs, linebacker Danny Stutsman, punter Luke Elzinga and defensive tackle Damonic Williams.
OU guaranteed it would go bowling for the 26th straight season by throttling No. 7 Alabama 24-3 in Norman on senior night.
OU is at LSU at 6 p.m. Saturday on ESPN.
OU racks up SEC honors
Hey, you dominate Alabama like that, and the awards are coming. Febechi Nwaiwu was named the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week. Same honor for R Mason Thomas for Defensive Lineman of the Week. And running back Xavier Robinson named Freshman of the Week.
Nwaiwu was rewarded by the OU coaches as the best OU lineman from a dominant rushing performance against the Crimson Tide.
The Sooners rushed for 205 yards in the first half on their way to averaging 5.1 yards per carry. It was the most rushing yards allowed by the Crimson Tide in 26 games and just the ninth game in the last 20 seasons it surrendered at least 250 rushing yards.

Thomas did what he has done all season. Kept coming and coming before finding home late. He had three tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Not registered for any of those is when Thomas hit Jalen Milroe’s arm that led to the final interception. The defense held Bama to its lowest number of points since 2004. Thomas now has eight sacks this season.
Robinson had a breakout performance with 107 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns. He got it rolling with a 40-yard gain on the initial rush. Never slowed down after that. It was Robinson’s fifth game, officially taking away his redshirt opportunity.
Head coach Brent Venables wasn’t left out, either. Venables was recognized as the Bobby Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week. That dominant of a defensive performance? Yep, you’re going to be recognized for it.
“Coach Venables and the Sooners had a defensive performance for the ages on Saturday in Norman,” said Chairman Jim Terry. “This was a statement win.”
