OU captains for Tulane: Gavin Sawchuk, Jacob Sexton, R Mason Thomas, Kobie McKinzie, Robert Spears-Jennings
No first-year guys here for OU. After a rough outing in a win against Houston, your captains are guys who have been around for a while.
Running back Gavin Sawchuk, offensive lineman Jacob Sexton, linebacker Kobie McKinzie, safety Robert Spears-Jennings and defensive end R Mason Thomas get the honor.
All five? All from the Class of 2022. OU needs to have some leadership shine through after an incredibly uneven performance against the Cougars.
Tulane (1-1) is one of the best non-Power 4 schools in the country and took Kansas State to the absolute limit last weekend.
OU might be in that same 1-1 spot if it wasn’t for Spears-Jennings. For the second game in a row, he came up big with a turnover.

His interception in the fourth quarter is the type of game-changing plays OU has gotten from its defense in the first two games.
RSJ a difference maker
“I mean, you’re gonna have bad plays,” linebacker Danny Stutsman said. “You’re gonna face adversity. I think it happens. Look at Robert Jennings, that one play. He just responded. That’s a veteran move right there. A lot of guys, a lot of younger guys are gonna have a situation like that where they’re gonna get down on themselves.
“It’s kind of that quicksand. They’re gonna have one play, and then it’s gonna let them affect the next play, and then the next play and next play and pretty soon they’re in over their head. But RJ did a great job responding, had a great week of practice all week and he goes in there and makes an interception. It was huge.”
Better to be 2-0 than 1-1, but everybody in the program knows there’s a bunch to clean up. The message was sent emphatically by head coach Brent Venables, stating multiple times they deserved to lose against UH. Can’t, won’t let that happen again.
