OU captains named vs. SC: Troy Everett, Luke Elzinga, Jayden Jackson, Danny Stutsman, Gracen Halton
One very interesting selection when it comes to the OU captains this week. It’s not often one of the captains is somebody who doesn’t really even see the field. But here we are.
Backup offensive lineman Troy Everett is one of the five named by the team to lead OU against South Carolina this weekend.
Everett will be joined by punter Luke Elzinga, linebacker Danny Stutsman, defensive tackle Gracen Halton and defensive tackle Jayden Jackson.
Jackson also becomes the first true freshman to earn the honor for this season.
It’s a gut-check game for OU, coming off a disheartening 34-3 loss to Texas in the Red River Rivalry. A game that wasn’t even as competitive as the 34-3 outcome.
Everybody knows the SEC schedule only gets tougher for OU. The back half of the slate has been talked about for months and months. Now it’s here.
If OU cannot get back on the winning side against the Gamecocks, what then? That’s part of the job of the weekly captains for this week.
You have got to steady this ship for head coach Brent Venables and company. Falling to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in SEC play would be an unmitigated disaster.

So OU is leaning on some familiar names like Stutsman and Halton and then some surprising names like Jackson and Everett.
Everett had been praised earlier this season by offensive line teammates that even though Everett was injured, he was still being the leader. Still being a guy the young players could ask questions to, still being incredibly engaged.
The Sooners need a jolt, no question. Maybe it comes from some unlikely sources, and we’ll see if it makes any sort of difference for OU this weekend.
OU is set to take on South Carolina at 11:45 a.m. Saturday on SEC Network. It is homecoming for the Sooners.
