OU commit Mykel Patterson-McDonald says ‘I’m staying home’
That was a unique way of making a commitment announcement and commitment video. Give credit to Mykel Patterson-McDonald for the creativity.
The three-star prospect from Moore (Okla.) Westmoore chose Oklahoma at a ceremony Monday evening. He played a five-minute video on a video projector behind him. In his narration, he said it was time, and then it showed a FaceTime conversation he was having with OU head coach Brent Venables.
Drama over.
“I wanted to let you know I’m all in,” Patterson-McDonald told Venables over the phone. “I’m staying home, Coach.”
Patterson-McDonald became OU’s 17th commitment for the 2024 class and the 11th ever since the #ChampUBBQ weekend during mid-June.
Patterson-McDonald should be a safety when he arrives at OU. But his relationship with safeties coach Brandon Hall and cornerbacks coach Jay Valai suggest he is getting familiar with everybody involved with defensive backs.

“My relationship with coach (Brandon) Hall and coach (Jay) Valai is very strong,” Patterson-McDonald said. “I love both of those coaches, they’re both amazing coaches. Every time I step in there, step in the office, all we do is talk ball. They always talk about how high my IQ is; I love both those coaches. They’re amazing coaches, and I look forward to being coached by them.”
Patterson’s OU commitment interview
Patterson-McDonald shifted toward his Wish List. Despite all the commitments for the Sooners in the last six weeks, there are still some massive targets out there.
And one in particular stands out with Patterson-McDonald. He has known five-star defensive lineman David Stone since they were kids, mentioning playing with him on 8U football teams.
Could they reunite in Norman? Stone remains a huge priority for OU the rest of the way.
“We always talk about playing together,” Patterson-McDonald said of Stone when asked by SoonerScoop. “Me and him are really tight. We’re close.”
