After a terrible performance in Lawrence, OU dropped four spots in the AP Poll. But the Sooners still sit in the top 10, coming in at No. 10.

Oklahoma suffered its first loss of the season Saturday to Kansas, losing 38-33. The Jayhawks, now 6-2 on the season, jumped into the top 25 at No. 22. Texas moved up to No. 7 and Kansas State also moved into the top 25 at No. 25. Oklahoma State was the first team left out of the poll, receiving 77 votes.

Despite the loss, the Sooners still have a lot to play for this season. And the AP Poll reflects that. OU controls its destiny to the Big 12 Championship, needing to win out to reach the title game in Arlington. But that could be difficult with road trips to Oklahoma State and BYU and home games against West Virginia and TCU. And if OU plays like it did Saturday, those games will be much more difficult than anticipated.

“I’ve been telling them several weeks in a row, we’re not going to be defined by any one win or any loss,” coach Brent Venables said Saturday. “We’ve got a lot still out in front of us. This one hurts. It stings. We got punished for, again, a lack of details and discipline, just me having our guys not ready to play at a high level. But we’ve got Oklahoma State and certainly the rest of our schedule, we’ve got, again, an opportunity to still achieve most of our goals. So, now it’s about how we respond.”

The only poll that really matters moving forward for the Sooners, and the rest of college football, is the College Football Playoff rankings. The first CFP poll of the season will be released Tuesday, Oct. 31, on ESPN.
