OU expected to land quarterback in NCAA transfer portal

OU is expected to sign Mercer quarterback Whitt Newbauer out of the NCAA transfer portal, according to a report by On3’s Pete Nakos.
Newbauer visited the Sooners on Friday after entering the portal a week ago. Oklahoma was interested in adding a veteran quarterback to provide depth behind starter John Mateer, following the departure of former Western Carolina QB Cole Gonzales. OU also has sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. and freshman Jett Niu currently on the roster. Hawkins is expected to be the backup.
“John being in the system for two years was a good deal for him. Because a lot of it is not having to teach him anymore,” offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle said. “But all the quarterbacks knew what was going on because they’re all smart, bright, intelligent kids who understand what it’s like to lead. Not just John. But they were able to get everybody on the same page at a really high level and really quick. Just those four guys being bought in, with the type of kids they are, made life a lot easier.”

Newbauer started nine games as a sophomore for Mercer in 2024, totaling 1,398 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound quarterback graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School in North Carolina.
With his addition, the Sooners now fill good about their depth at the most important position. Newbauer joins Cal running back Jaydn Ott, Stanford offensive lineman Jake Maikkula, Utah State defensive tackle Ricky Lolohea and UTSA kicker Tate Sandell, who all transferred to OU this spring.
