You never would have guessed Otega Oweh as a transfer portal name for OU basketball after non-conference play.

But something happened in Big 12 action, and Oweh never found his stride again except for a glimpse here and there.

Oweh becomes the first OU player to announce his intentions to enter the transfer portal, making it official Monday. He spent his first two seasons in Norman and will have two seasons of eligibility left.

His stats tell a pretty good story for his sophomore season. Oweh averaged 11.4 points per game with 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals.

In the first two months of the season, though, he looked like he was going to be a vital contributor the entire season.

Oweh scored less than 10 points in 10 of the final 12 games. He had scored double-digits in 17 of the first 20 contests. He lost his starting spot to senior Rivaldo Soares down the stretch of the season.

Oweh’s one big-time notable contribution was a 16-point effort in the epic overtime win at Oklahoma State in the final Bedlam. The hope was that would be a catalyst to a strong finish. It just never panned out.

Oweh was the first high school recruit committed to head coach Porter Moser for the 2022 class, Moser’s first calendar class.

That now gives Moser two scholarships, at this time, for portal additions. OU only signed two high school prospects and is losing three super seniors.

Everybody expected a few portal entries, and Oweh becomes the first.
