One of the memorable moments of Selection Sunday for the NCAA softball bracket was the Boston University reaction to heading to OU. At least it was memorable to some, taken out of context by a lot of others.

On the surface? It looked like a team that absolutely did not want any part of the Sooners, the reigning four-time defending national champions.

However, OU head coach Patty Gasso didn’t see it that way. And Boston University coach Ashley Waters wanted to make sure nobody saw it in that manner.

It’s just, well, Boston is returning to OU yet again. And that’s where not knowing the tournament committee’s protocols or anything shows up.

Gasso understood the sentiment from the Terriers.

I do not,” said Gasso on Wednesday about the committee’s protocols. “That’s where I learned what a cobra whatever (surrender cobra) was. I didn’t understand that. I didn’t know what was so funny about it. To me, it wasn’t like, ‘oh my gosh we have to play the Sooners.’ It’s more like, ‘Oh my gosh, we’ve got to go back there again.’

“And I don’t blame them for that. And we’ve seen Cal-Berkeley in a couple recently. So I don’t know why. Obviously doesn’t mean maybe a lot to the committee that you’re going back, it just fits the piece to the puzzle. Quite honestly, across the board, I felt like there was more equality than I’ve felt.”

Waters pointed out on social media that all Boston has known is Oklahoma. Boston was at OU in 2018 and 2024. It was also sent to Oklahoma State during the 2021 season. Essentially, hey, can we see something different?

“I would wish that’s something they would pay attention to. Because it is the experience for the student-athlete to get to another place and see something new,” Gasso said. “This is a new stadium that they haven’t felt completely yet. I do agree that I wish they had more opportunities to experience something different. Not disappointment but give us something different.”

Cal was at OU for the 2023 regional, the final season at Marita Hynes Field.

OU opens up against Boston in the Norman Regional at 5 p.m. Friday. The game will begin following the conclusion of Cal and Omaha, set for a 2:30 first pitch.

The winners will play 1 p.m. Saturday, with the regional championship beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.

It is the 14th year in a row that OU is hosting a regional.
