OU basketball head coach Porter Moser might be linked with a lot of things, a lot of people in his lifetime. Get Moser to talk about Sister Jean, though, and you understand the depth of their friendship and a bond that can never be and never will be broken.

The two will be linked together for the fun runs for Loyola (Chicago) during Moser’s tenure with the Ramblers.

Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt died Thursday night at the age of 106, Loyola announced. She was a Catholic nun, campus minister and official chaplain of the Ramblers men’s basketball team. And obviously, though, a lot more than that.

Moser’s statement

“Sister started every prayer during my time with her at Loyola the same: “Good and gracious God…” Moser said in a social media post Friday afternoon. “Those words were so her.

“She had time for everyone. She had a kind word for everyone. She listened and gave encouragement to everyone. She had a true self purpose to help others. What a legacy to leave behind.

“So today as we all mourn the death of our dear friend Sister Jean, my heart is sad but also filled with joy and gratitude for my time spent with her and the impact she had on my life and so many others.

“So I know this… I will be talking about Sister Jean for years to come. Her unparalleled positivity and energy for life. To the best of my ability, I will be sharing her purpose to help others. And from time to time, I will be praying to her… “Good and gracious Sister Jean, I miss you and glad you are home!”

Moser, Sister Jean and the Ramblers made a memorable run to the Final Four back in 2018. Loyola reached the Sweet 16 under Moser in 2021.

Moser is entering his fifth season as the head coach of OU and has never been hesitant to bring up something, anything from his time with Sister Jean and, after all, how much she has meant to him through the years.
